General Engineering Science

GES LogoGeneral Outline

The TUHH‘s international bachelor‘s program General Engineering Science (GES) consists of interdisciplinary basic studies followed by the choice of one of 9 branches of specialized studies. All fields of the classical engineering sciences are presented in a single basic course of study. This offer of a general basic course in engineering science is unique under the German university system.

Postgraduate Opportunities

Since its foundation as a research university TUHH has always had close contacts to leading German and European high-technology companies. There are many joint research projects, allowing qualified students to do their internship or thesis in one of these industrial partner institutions. This cooperation, in combination with the excellent reputation of education at TUHH with potential employers, opens up very good opportunities for employment in Germany after graduation. Furthermore, the new German Federal Immigration Act enables international students to look for a job and to obtain a work permit after successfully completing a degree course at a German university.

The B.Sc. degree of TUHH allows graduates to continue their studies in a corresponding master’s program and after that to a Ph.D. TUHH offers a great variety of M.Sc. programs as well as many interesting projects and positions for students wishing to pursue doctoral studies. Thus, a considerable number of students decide to stay at TUHH after graduation.

TUHH is currently building up a world-wide alumni network, enabling former students to stay in touch with their university and with each other. A regular newsletter will keep you informed about recent developments in teaching and research and about social life at the university. Invitations to seminars and conferences will allow you to keep pace with the scientific progress in your field and to meet former classmates and professors.

Outline Of Conditions

The majority of lectures taking place during the first two semesters of the bachelor's program will be held in English. This is intended to give the student a good start to the course of study. Lectures in Mathematics, Fundamentals in Physics and Electrical Engineering and Mechanics will be given by international professors, who are native speakers of English and/or who have teaching experience in an English-speaking academic environment. The beginning of the course is 1st October.

The establishment of the program has been funded and supported by:

GES_Plus

The new eight-semester specialisation “GES_Plus” with integrated year abroad, offers an attractive amplification to those students who would like to spend time at a university abroad and to serve an internship during their Bachelor’s program.

Allgemeine Ingenieurwissenschaften – The Counterpart To GES

The bachelor’s degree course in Allgemeine Ingenieurwissenschaften (AIW) offers an interesting alternative to those who are already proficient in German and who wish to pursue a course of study that is completely conducted in German language. This degree course is open to German as well as international candidates. AIW teaches the same subjects and with its modular structure offers the same choice of fields of specialisation as GES. There is a joint set of study and examination regulations for the two degree courses. In contrast to GES, however, all classes in AIW are taught in German language. Thus, German students can fully rely on their familiar native language as medium of instruction and improve their foreign language skills by attending separate language classes at TUHH. International students can apply their proficiency in German in a fully German-speaking academic environment while being able to further improve their knowledge of German by making use of the various German language courses offered at TUHH. Some classes in AIW will be conducted together with students from GES and other degree courses at TUHH. Advice and guidance with regard to the choice between GES and AIW is available from the Office of International Academic Programmes (study@tu-harburg.de) and from the Central Students Counselling Office (studienberatung@tu-harburg.de) at TUHH.
