The Hamburg University Of Technology
Future-oriented, Innovative And International
Young and ingenious – these are just two words to describe the Hamburg University of Technology. TUHH, as its logo reads, was just founded in 1978. Since that time, in an unusually short time by university standards, it has turned into a popular and successful training center for the new generation of engineers.
About TUHH
Today, about 100 senior lectures/ professors and 1.150 members of staff (including externally funded researchers) work at the TUHH. With an average of 4.500 students, the TUHH offers a uniquely high ratio of staff to students. All important buildings of TUHH, which have been built over the past years, are situated in a campus park environment. There is plenty of scope for a productive exchange of ideas and for making acquaintances. About one in five of our students is of a foreign nationality; this ranks us as one of the top universities in Germany. We would like to increase the number of international students because we consider ourselves all as “global players”. TUHH promotes interdisciplinary research, teaching and learning. You will be integrated into research and development projects at an early stage, thus providing a smooth transition to working life.
Student Activities
The student’s union arranges various sports and entertainment activities, e.g. sailing, hang gliding, soccer, rowing as well as singing, dancing and making music. Parties, particularly the summer festival of TUHH, are very popular among students and staff.
Student Services
Rooms For International Freshmen
Studierendenwerk Hamburg and Accommodation Office TUHH have entered into cooperation to design a program with the purpose of increasing the number of rooms available. The aim of this program is to provide as many students in their freshmen year as possible with a room in a hall of residence on their arrival in Germany.
Compass – Live-in Student Orientation
When you have obtained a room in this program, you will have the possibility to take up email contact with special student residency tutors from the program: Compass - Live-in Student Orientation. They will give you further information about the day-to-day living in student halls of residence in Hamburg. They will also be able to assist you on your arrival in Hamburg to help you make a good start on your course at TUHH.
Welcome@TUHH
The Integration Program for international students Welcome@TUHH offers you assistance at the beginning of your studies at the TUHH. This program also accompanies you through your whole degree course and helps to integrate into the campus community more easily. The program is supported by international student tutors who are well acquainted with both studying at the TUHH and living in Hamburg and who accompany you to orientation and cultural activities, international meetings and offer you a chance of joining a study group.
Starting@TUHH
The StartING@TUHH Tutorials Program helps first-semester engineering students get off to a good start at TUHH and contribute to the optimization of their success in their studies. The Central Student Counseling Service organizes in collaboration with the deans, faculties and departments in question tutorials that are run by older students on a semester basis for newcomers.
Studying In Hamburg
Hamburg - A City To Live In And Love
With a population of 1,735 million, Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city. As the centre of a metropolitan region with a population of nearly 4.3 million, this city is an exciting place to live in. No other city can offer its residents such proximity to water and green spaces in combination with the benefits of living in the middle of a pulsating metropolis. Hamburg is a city of culture. There are musicals, cabaret and more than 40 theatres, ballet, opera, fine jazz music events, 200 museums and galleries and fashionable bars and music clubs. Hamburg is one of the most dynamic commercial centres in Europe. Modern services in the logistics, technological and media sectors have taken their place alongside modern industrial production and traditional trade in shaping Hamburg’s economy.
While Hamburg and its harbour open the gate to the world of trade and transport, the Hamburg University of Technology opens up the gate to the world of knowledge.
Financing Your Studies
To a limited extent, partial funding in the form of performance-related scholarships, scholarships linked to support work and scholarships for the final phase of the program is available for international students at TUHH. Apart from that, the student service organisation in Hamburg awards a limited number of partial scholarships to international students to enable them to complete their studies. Full scholarships are available from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other scholarship organisations. For detailed information on scholarships and funding please refer to the following web pages:

It is possible for well-qualified students to work part-time as a teaching or research assistant at TUHH. Please note, however, that such jobs require a considerable amount of initiative and can neither be arranged in advance nor at a distance. Since the course schedule is quite demanding and employment is limited by German regulations, student jobs inside or outside the university can only partially cover the expenses for studying at TUHH and for living in Hamburg.
