Exemption from Payment of Fees Pursuant to § 6b Paragraph 5 item 1 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz) on Grounds of Care and Upbringing of a Child
Students with children up to age 14 are exempt from payment of fees if their studies take longer than the standard duration of the course of studies for which they are enrolled, plus two additional semesters. This arrangement is designed to make up for the disadvantage that students with children often take longer to complete their studies.
Under the Hamburg Higher Education Act, students with children have the opportunity to claim exemption from payment of fees at the earliest when the completed period of studies exceeds the duration of entitlement to defer payment (standard duration of the current course of studies plus two additional semesters, with periods of study at a German state university or a state institution of equal rank taken into account).
This means that no exemption is possible if the period of studies completed is less than the period of entitlement to defer payment of fees. The application for exemption from payment of tuition fees on childcare grounds is available from the Admissions Office.
