Rooms for Exchange Students
It is often rather difficult for exchange students to find a room that suits their needs and is available for the exact dates of their stay in Hamburg. Many students have very definite ideas about the kind of accommodation that they would like to stay in, however it is usually necessary to make compromises in order to find a room. When you first make contact with us, it would be useful if you could send us an accommodation search form (doc) so that we can get a clearer idea of your needs, how to contact you etc.
Rooms available in halls of residence
Some rooms in halls of residence have been especially reserved for exchange students who are planning to stay in Hamburg for one semester only. These rooms are in the “Harburger Häuser”, “Gustav-Radbruch-Haus” and ”Wohnhaus Harburg” halls of residence. They are in apartments in which between two and eight students live together in single rooms, sharing kitchen and bathroom facilities. The size of the kitchen and quantity of bathroom facilities correspond to the number of students sharing the apartment.
Getting a room in a hall of residence
If you would like to stay in a student hall of Studierendenwerk Hamburg, it is important to send your application for a place on an exchange program to the International Office and contact the Accommodation Office TUHH as early as possible. Students should do this by 15th August at the latest if they wish to arrive in Hamburg for the winter semester and 15th January if they wish to arrive in Hamburg for the summer semester. Please note that rooms are largely distributed on a first come, first served basis so you might want to apply well before these dates!
A limited number of rooms can be rented for a fixed period from 15th September till 31st March for one semester only. Students staying for one semester only will be given priority for these rooms. The communal facilities (i.e. kitchen, hall and bathroom facilities) of apartments, available for one semester only, will be cleaned professionally twice per week. These rooms cost €277 per month.
There will also be some rooms available from 15th September until 31st August. All rooms are subject to availability. The rooms bookable for this period will not be cleaned regularly by professional staff. These rooms cost €251 per month.
* Please inquire at Accommodation Office about exceptions for Erasmus Mundus students.
When you have contacted the Accommodation Office, it is important to check your email account regularly in order to be able to book a room. When you receive an offer, it is necessary to pay a deposit of €380 (€480 for Triftstraße). The room will then be reserved for you and you will consequently be responsible for the rental payments for the room for the duration of the booking. Please note that it is not possible to change the length of the booking at short notice.
Application Procedure
If you wish to apply for a room in a hall of residence, please fill out an application form for Studierendenwerk Hamburg as well as an accommodation search form. You are welcome to fill in the application form for the Studierendenwerk in German if you wish. All forms should then be returned to Accommodation Office. It will then be necessary that you check your email account regularly and respond promptly and appropriately to the emails if we can send you an offer. A payment of €380 (€480 for Triftstraße) is to be made when you make the booking. €80 of this will be kept by the Studentenwerk when you move out to cover costs for renovation, repairs and to keep the room in good condition. The remaining amount of €300 (€ 400 for Triftstraße) is returnable when the rental agreement ends, providing that the facilities are basically clean and undamaged.
Here you can find the check list for the application procedure (pdf).
