Mechanical engineering remains one of the disciplines on which Germany’s prosperity is based. Recent years have seen a radical transformation in this field. Today, mechanical engineering mainly involves integrating different systems from the fields of electrical engineering, computer science, and/or process and chemical engineering with traditional mechanical engineering systems in order to make competitive products. Moreover, the typical problems that engineers are called on to solve now demand not only technical know-how, but also economic, ecological and sociological skills, and teaching of these has been consolidated in the new Bachelor’s and Master’s programs.
The School of Mechanical Engineering is the largest of the TUHH Schools, with a total of 23 associated institutes. Building on a common Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, it offers six specialized Master’s programs in different mechanical engineering-related fields of research and activity. It also offers a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Naval Architecture, and other courses in cooperation with other schools of the university, including Mechatronics and General Engineering Science. We actively support international studies, especially on Master’s courses, where we recognize credits earned in semesters spent at our partner universities abroad.
The institutes of the School of Mechanical Engineering are closely integrated into various research specializations. Because of this and the TUHH’s traditionally strong research focus, our courses are research-oriented as a general rule.
The aim of the Bachelor’s courses is not only to lay the theoretical foundation for a later academic career but first and foremost to equip students with practical knowledge and problem solving skills.
The standard final qualification is a Master’s degree. Master’s degrees build directly on Bachelor’s degrees. They are optimally coordinated and equivalent to graduation with an engineering diploma (Dipl.-Ing.).
Our widely diversified offering, ranging from product development to aircraft systems engineering or shipbuilding, and the knowledge and skills imparted open up for graduates a variety of interesting work opportunities, particularly in research and development in various branches of industry such as mechanical and systems engineering, automotive engineering, naval architecture and aeronautical engineering.
A further interesting opportunity for suitable graduates is to pursue postgraduate studies while working as a research assistant on an institute research project and to take a doctorate in engineering or natural science (Dr.-Ing. or Dr. rer. nat.).
