Founded in 1973, the University of Aveiro is one of Portugal's leading
institutions of higher education. It enjoys an excellent reputation for
academic excellence, innovation, state-of-the-art technology and cultural
intervention.
Aveiro is located 250 km north of Lisbon and 10 km from the Atlantic
coastline. It is a lively city at the focus of an important region of
business and enterprise. The main characteristic of the surrounding area
is an extensive lagoon ("ria") covering some 11,000 hectares between the
land and the ocean. The City offers a wide choice of entertainment
including bars, restaurants, night-clubs, cinemas, theatre and concerts and
of course there are the thriving Portuguese cafés. If you're looking
for history and art, Aveiro has museums, churches, monuments and public
buildings of architectural importance and the town is very popular for its
gastronomy, fairs and exhibitions.
The University of Aveiro is now an exponent of quality and progress,
occupying an outstanding place in the field of higher education.
Part of the University's success lies in the fact that it offers innovative
courses that are closely allied with regional and national productivity,
and as yet unexplored by the traditional Portuguese institutions of higher
education.
As a modern institution designed for the acquisition of scientific, artistic,
and technological knowledge, the University of Aveiro seeks to provide all
the conditions and means necessary to develop research both in the University's
Departments and in its Research Units and Associated Laboratories. The
University of Aveiro also provides a varied assortment of business-related
services: from professional training and distance learning to the creation of
new business ventures such as surveying and sampling as well as specific
research.
National and international exchange has also been one of the University's main
goals. The University sustains the idea that all its students shall have
extramural training or some kind of Erasmus-like experience in a national or
foreign university. For this reason, the University strongly supports student
mobility and training courses, participating in many international education
and training programmes.
The University of Aveiro has 17 academic Departments offering a full range of innovative taught/research programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in a number of key areas: Science and Technology; Engineering; Education and Humanities; Health Sciences; Communications, Arts and Design; Management, Accountancy and Economics; Planning. Research is carried out in 15 Research Units plus 2 Associated Laboratories, coordinated by the Research Institute.
The academic year is divided into two 15 week semesters, each followed by an assessment period. The Autumn semester usually begins in the final week of September and the Spring semester begins in late February.
There are two basic types of accommodation; University owned student
residences on (and off) campus and private sector student housing in town
(apartments or lodgings with a family).
Room and board, transportation, laundry, books and study materials, social
life, trips etc. come to around 650 € per month for students living in
Aveiro.
International Students make their applications for accommodation to the
University via the International Office. They will fill in the application
form which is posted to them once they are accepted to study at the
University.
Language tuition is offered free of charge to exchange students (6 hours
per week) at the Department of Languages and Cultures.
As the place of first contact for new international students, the
International Office provides information and orientation in all aspects of
student life at the University of Aveiro.
We organise orientation days for new students and a programme of monthly
outings, which is very popular with our community of foreign students.
