The Joint European Master programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES) is offered by four leading European universities in environmental research and education, each one with specific knowledge in the field, who joined forces to provide an integrated, state-of-the-art technological and management education.
JEMES is particular in its interdisciplinary character, the close link
between practical and theoretical components, the project character of many
courses, the research-based thesis, and the "shift of perspective" all students
have to undergo during training.
In its two streams, Environmental Technology Engineering and Environmental
Management Engineering, JEMES interweaves technological and management
education, research-based courses and intensive practical exercises on a
high academic level. Students start in one stream, do the second semester
in the other and then decide in which direction to specialise. The last
semester is entirely devoted to thesis research.
The programme enables students to profit from the specific expertise available
at each partner and offers an exceptional good student-professor ratio of
1:2,5. Language of education is English. A distribution of 50% third country
and 50% European students is intended. Staff mobility is an integral part of
JEMES. The duration of the programme is 2 years (120 ECTS).

To ensure proficiency in English, a TOEFL score of 550 (PBT), 213 (CBT) or 79 (IBT) is required.
General fees of 3000 € per year will be charged for the programme. All students have to pay the same amount of fees, regardless of their origin. The fees contain tuition, administrative fees and extra costs for the organisation of the programme. They will be used for
For reasons of simplicity of administration, all fees have to
be paid to the Universidade de Aveiro, regardless where the student wishes to
start.
Please note that in case of mobility from your home university (i.e. the
university where you start the programme) to one of the other JEMES
universities, you may be asked to pay some additional charges at the host
university (e.g. for subsidised use of public transport, contribution to
independent student union/association etc.)
The International Offices of the partner universities are the main contact
points for incoming students and scholars and are experienced to handle most
situations. They will facilitate the administrative tasks of mobility, offer
various services and support the incomers in daily problems they may have.
All students will be provided with a common JEMES manual with information on
each university / surrounding, structures, procedures, assistance, language
offers etc. JEMES staff will edit the first edition of this manual. Then, the
students will do annual re-editions. Academic tutors who teach in the programme
will be appointed to each student per term to assist the student in all
academic matters. The tutor will change when the student moves to another
institution; if he/she returns to the previous institution, the same tutor as
before shall be in charge again.
Additionally, a personal student mentor will be assigned to each student
throughout semester 1. This mentor assists in all practical matters (paper
work, orientation on campus and in town, leisure activities etc). Orientation
days/weeks will be arranged at the beginning of every semester.
