Doctoral Degrees at TUHH

General Information

All details concerning prerequisites and the application process are described in the doctoral degree regulations (Promotionsordnung) and the doctoral degree procedures (Durchführungsregelung zur Promotionsordnung).

The following doctoral degrees can be obtained at TUHH:

Dr.-Ing. Dr. rer. pol. Dr. rer. nat.

The special prerequisites are defined in § 3 doctoral degree regulations.

The first step is finding a professor of TUHH who is willing to supervise your research work. The research priorities of our professors can be found here. Please contact the person of your choice directly.

In the next step your application for admission to the doctoral studies has to be submitted to the "Doctoral Degree Committee" (Promotionssausschuss) The form can be found here (PDF in german).

Then the candidate submits the dissertation along with the "Application for the Doctoral Degree Proceedings (PDF in German)"

Special procedure for applicants with foreign educational background

Before admission to the doctoral studies can be given, all foreign certificates have to be checked for equivalence to a German degree. Please contact Ms. Wolfeil and show your certificate (e.g. Master's degree) together with detailed transcripts, showing courses and grades. In case your documents are not in German, English or French language you have to present officially authenticated translations.

Financing

Doctoral candidates may apply for a TUHH-scholarship or a position as a teaching or research assistant. Offers can be found here.

In addition, scholarships from external organizations are offered. You can find some (not all !) of them here.

Social affairs

Scholarship holders may enroll as a doctoral candidate after being admitted by the Committee. Before admission is given, you may enroll as a student for "advanced academic training" (up to two semesters).

For both kinds of enrollment, a maximum of income (according to TUHH-scholarship ratio) is fixed.

In all cases valid health insurance has to be proved.

Further Information

TUHH administration does not arrange accomodation for doctoral candidates.
The halls of residence run by the Students`s Welfare Organization (Studentenwerk Hamburg) do not offer accomodation for doctoral candidates.
