Welcome to the Institute of Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering at the
Hamburg University of Technology
Founded in 1986 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Herbert Märkl, the institute has a long tradition
and high reputation in research in bioprocess engineering. It is headed by Prof. Dr.
An-Ping Zeng since 2006. Presently, about 30 staff members, mostly at Postdoc and PhD
student levels, are working in an interdisciplinary environment. We develop new tools
and concepts in Bioprocess Engineering and Systems Biology with applications in
White and Red Biotechnologies and Synthetic Biotechnology. Our central theme: Engineering of
the cell as a system and the bioproduction system as an integrated process.

For teaching we are actively involved in several
B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in Process
Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering. Following the German tradition in training
engineers we emphasize a solid engineering understanding and practical handling.
Furthermore, we train a new generation of engineers with a deep molecular and
systemic understanding of cellular processes.
