Information for Prospective Students
Admission Procedure
All the international masters courses demand GRE and TOEFL as the basic application criteria. There is no cut-off score to be specific, but the University looks at GRE and TOEFL score as requirements along with good academic and extracurricular activities in the bachelor level. These information need to be detailed in the curriculum vitae or in the statement of purpose. Details as to the deadlines for the various courses can be found in the link under the respective International masters courses.
The application for the admission can be made online or by paper based method.
Note: Though there is no requirement from TUHH, few German consulates in India ask for TOEFL scores which are not more than six months old in order to issue the VISA, therefore kindly check your respective state German Consulates for the correct procedure.
Admission Tips and Hints
Though TUHH is one of the youngest Universities in Germany, it has already created a niche among the best in the league by its close co-operation with companies like Airbus, Thyssenkrupp, Deutsche Bahn and others for research, innovation and development. The quality of education and research is of the high quality, therefore getting a seat to study is a dream come true.
A very good GRE score along with very good academic results and maybe a publication or two in undergraduate studies are important things to look at before applying to TUHH. Since the University has a very good mix of people all over the globe, heterogeneity in profile will definitely be an added advantage to secure a seat in the esteemed university.
There are no fixed requirements as outlined by the university, but before applying the compatibility of the course should be checked in relation to the bachelor studies, since this is the primary criteria. Further, if you have some professional experience and now want to hone your management skills, you may also consider applying for a dual degree of MSc and MBA at Northern Institute of Technology Management, an institute founded by professors and well wishers of TUHH.
Visa Process
On being admitted as a master's student at TUHH, the first requirement is to get a VISA for the study period through the respective consulates specific to students in India. Normally the VISA procedure takes around three weeks to a month with proper documents and the bank draft (currently changed to a bank account opening with 7200 Euros, as a deposit). Please visit the web site of respective German consulates in India for a detailed information.
Please note that different consulates in different places in India have their own rules and regulations, in order to issue a VISA, therefore, on being admitted, the first task is to get information about the VISA procedures that's valid for that particular place.
Note: As per the experience of the students coming from Chennai, the German consulate in Chennai does not accept TOEFL scores which are more than 6 months old. Please check again for current validity.
Also note that the students who are admitted to NIT MBA program, may not have to show the funds but the scholarship letter along with the admission documents is enough to proceed for a VISA but please clarify the point before you proceed.
Travel and Insurance Guidelines
Having obtained the proper VISA, the next step is to book flight tickets to Hamburg. Normally, arriving on the same day as and when the accommodation is confirmed in Hamburg is the best idea. Purchasing a ticket can be costly if bought just before the day of travel, so the recommendation would be to book tickets in advance and get cheap rates, but the accommodation factor should also be kept in mind.
Insurance is compulsory to as a student in Germany. The health insurance can be obtained once you are in Hamburg. Travel insurance concerning luggage loss etc and also of health insurance during the travel depends on the candidate and is not a mandatory requirement. Most students do without it. In case students are carrying valuables, it is justifiable to insure.
Opening a Bank Account
Opening a student bank account in one of the banks in Hamburg is a mandatory. In the same account you may deposit the DD you had obtained during the Visa process. The bank account would also be verified when the three months of preliminary Visa issued in India is extended to two year student resident permit at the local authorities in Hamburg.
Registering with the Authorities
Once you are in Hamburg, the first thing that is of utmost importance is to register with the authorities, at the Hamburg Rathaus. TUHH has student tutors and they along with the International office of the students will help you to get the necessary registration. Please keep an eye and register yourself at the Welcome@TUHH program that helps the new students about Hamburg, TUHH etc. Having proper documents, originals of all results, passport and VISA along with scholarship certificates for the courses at TUHH are a must for smooth registration. Please do a proper check of all the documents before leaving India.
