DiPol Booklets, Vol. 3

In order to showcase the ideas, objectives and results of the DiPol project a series of three booklets will be prepared and published. These booklets are available in multiple languages, including the Scandinavian languages Norwegian, Swedish, Danish as well as English and German. Each volume contains both, general information on DiPOl as well as a focus on one or two aspects of particular interest in the framework of the project activities.

The third volume is entitled "SIMACLIM for water quality" and it is comprising information on some of the major project deliverables, such as the "Web-based Knowledge Platform", the presentation tools "OpenEarth/GoogleEarth" and "MapmyClimate" as well as "SIMACLIM".

The booklets are available both, by download from our website and as printed copies by order from the projects lead beneficiary TUHH. Enjoy reading!

DiPol-Newsletter, Vol. 5

With the fifth Newsletter the DiPol project announces its final conference to be held September 15th in the city of Hamburg. The conference will provide an overview on the results achieved during the past three years, allow for discussion with local and regional stakeholders and include mayor findings of other Interreg-IVB projects in the North Sea Region.

In addition you will find information about DiPol's fifth consortium meeting in Delft (March 2011) as well as a short summary on one of the modelling approaches within DiPol: SCREMOTOX and coastal transport.

DiPol Booklets, Vol. 2

In order to showcase the ideas, objectives and results of the DiPol project a series of three booklets will be prepared and published. Each volume contains both, general information on DiPOl as well as a focus on one or two aspects of particular interest in the framework of the project activities.

The second volume is entitled "Climate change and water quality" and places emphasis on transnational partnership in connection with investigations carried out at the Danish case study: Joint research with the objective of a clean North Sea. Furthermore the question is raised (and answered) whether to swim in the river Elbe or not.

2011/03/07-09

5th DiPol Consortium Meeting, Delft (NL)

The fifth consortium meeting is scheduled March 7th to 9th 2011 and will take place in Delft. The meeting comprises both, workshops organized by specific workgroups (Monday 7th afternoon and Wednesday 9th afternoon) as well as the General Assembly on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th morning, which will address the current status of project activities and future planning. Wednesday afternoon, however, is dedicated to the further development of SIMACLIM, in particular the 4RM and the Sensitivity Model.

The meeting will be held at the Institute of Deltares (www.deltares.nl). Participants are recommended to arrange their accommodation at Hamshire Hotel - Delft Centre, from where a shuttle service to Deltares will be available. Monitoring campaign at the German Case Study Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg

In the framework of WP2 "EduTainment" and WP3 “Risk analysis” a monitoring campaign has been conducted in Hamburg Wilhelmsburg. This case study serves as an example for urban areas influenced by large rivers.

Pupils from the upper secondary school Kirchdorf-Wilhelmsburg participated in the campaign under the guidance of scientists form the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) as well as the University of Applied Science, Hamburg (HAW). The collected water and sediment samples have been further analyzed at the laboratories of TUHH and the results will be integrated into the Web based Knowledge Platform (WKP).

DiPol-Newsletter, Vol. 4

The fourth Newsletter demonstrates the transnational approach within the DiPol project.

German and Danish scientists closely cooperated at the Danish case study "Harrestrup Stream" and achieved valuable results. Furthermore all partners contributed towards the successful start of the Web based Knowledge Platform as well as the further development of the simulation and demonstration tool SIMACLIM.

EduTainment - Studying the future

The integration of pupils is a central aspect of the DiPol project as coming generations will be exceedingly affected by the impacts of climate change. In Oslo the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute closely cooperates with the Elvebakken upper secondary school. This cooperation is part of the work package on EduTainment, aiming (beside others) at a raise of public awareness on impacts of climate change on water quality. One of the results so far is an article designed and produced by the Elvebakken pupils.

The third Newsletter presents latest news from the 4 DiPol Case Studies in Hamburg, Gothenburg, Oslo and Copenhagen.

During the second year of the project field work at the case studies is in the focus of interest. Data gained in the framework of these investigations set the basis for a future usage and implementation of SIMACLIM, a communication and decision making tool.

4th DiPol Consortium Meeting, Oslo (N)

The fourth consortium meeting is scheduled September 20th to 22nd 2010 and will take place in Oslo. The meeting comprises both, workshops organized by specific workgroups (Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st) as well as the general assembly which will address the current status of project activities and future planning. In addition a visit to the Norwegian case site “Inner Oslo Fjord” is foreseen on Tuesday afternoon, September 21st.

The meeting will be held at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) (www.NGI.no). Participants are recommended to arrange their accommodation at Thon Hotel Ullevaal Stadion, close to NGI. The DiPol-Project will be presented in the framework of the regional Interreg IVB water-workshop in Bad Bevensen, Germany. The workshop is organized by the German National Contact Point.

3nd DiPol Consortium Meeting, Gothenburg (S)

The third consortium meeting is scheduled March 15st to 18th 2010 and will take place in Gothenburg. In addition a visit to the Swedish case site “Göta Älv” is foreseen on Tuesday afternoon, March 16th.

Workshop on pathogenic bacteria (WG-B), Luebeck (D)

The University of Applied Sciences Luebeck as leader of Working Group ‘B’ organises a one-day workshop on pathogenic bacteria. The workshop will focus on investigation results from the two case studies in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg (D) as well as Copenhagen (DK). The results should be implemented into a database for risk assessment and evaluation of the bacterial pollution of drinking water. A summary of the workshop outcomes will be presented in the framework of the next consortium meeting in March 2010.

2nd DiPol Consortium Meeting, Copenhagen [Denmark]

The second consortium meeting is scheduled September 21st to 23rd 2009 and will take place in Copenhagen. The meeting will address the current status of project activities as well as contractual and financial issues. In addition a visit to the Danish case site “Harrestrup Stream, Copenhagen Habour” is foreseen on Monday, September 21st.

Local Seminar on System Analysis

A 4-day seminar attended by 4 scientists from the two DiPol-Partners FH Lübeck and HAW Hamburg and 7 students has been conducted in June 2009.

Initiated by FH Lübeck a system analysis for the German Case site “Wilhelmsburg” has been performed, serving as starting point for a detailed DPSIR (Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) analysis.

The results of the seminar will be presented in the course of the upcoming consortium meeting in September.

Wilhelmsburg is the biggest district of Hamburg with an area of 35.3 km² and has about 48000 inhabitants, (many port and industrial workers, many immigrants). On this small area, industrial legacies, active industrial facilities, agricultural land, nature protection areas, urban sites, small trades and allotments are found.
