Configuration of Outlook XP & 2003 for the Mailing at TUHH
ATTENTION: This instruction does not work with Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express 6.Users of Outlook 2002/XP need to install Office XP ServicePack 3 and a special POST-SP3 Hotfix, see http://www.tu-harburg.de/rzt/mailing/inkompatibel.shtml
Users of Outlook 2003 need to install Office 2003 Service Pack 3!
Configuration
First of all, you have to notify Outlook program that you receive the e-mail
from an existing account at TUHH. For this purpose, open 'E-mail Accounts' '
from the 'Tool' menu.
Choose „Add new e-mail account” to let Outlook know, where your
mailbox is to be found and how you have to access your account with Outlook
to deal with your mailbox.
You have to choose whether you want to access the e-mail by POP3 protocol or
by IMAP protocol. Unfortunately this setting can not be changed later without
repeating the whole setting procedure from the beginning.
POP-clients save the e-mail locally in folders on the local PC on which Outlook
is running. This setting is ideal if you always work on the same PC (computer).
IMAP-clients offer the possibility to save e-mail in folders on the mail-server.
This setting is ideal when you would like to access e-mail frequently from different
workstations.
So, the setting for POP is as follows:
Or for IMAP is as follows:
The following pages are the same for both POP3 and IMAP protocols, until the
entry of the protocol names in parenthesis.
So, it follows:
Or else:
Following the picture description, you have to store your password and select "Remember Password" option, otherwise the e-mail sending will not function!
With the option button 'More settings ' you can reach the further settings. First of all, you should give a suggestive name to your configuration. The name of configuration is used for the distinction in the case when you want to manage several mailboxes in Outlook.
The name of the organization is shown in the header of every outgoing e-mail.
Under “Outgoing Server” (mail.tu-harburg.de) is to be filled out,
so as to (with the intention) a possible authentication is carried out. That
happens always, when you are just working with the PC (computer) that does not
belong to the TUHH network.
The setting “Connect using my local area network (LAN)” is always
correct if you work inside the TUHH network. For the use from home or somewhere
outside the TUHH network, you have to apply the other options in the setting.
The setting 'Advanced' differs itself according, whether you apply (use) a POP3 server or an IMAP server.
So, for the IMAP server, it follows:
And for the POP server, it follows:
It is really better, when you do not hand over the password to the PC (computer),
while you cannot later remember if is necessary.
Regarding the mailing at TUHH, you can now finish the configuration of Outlook with button 'Finish'.
