The MSDNAA Program at the TUHH

MSDNAA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance)

The TUHH participates to the MSDN Academic Alliance Program (MSDN AA). This is a yearly subscription which allows professors, research assistants and students enrolled in departments, to use licenses for selected Microsoft products under specified conditions:

The eligibility requirements for students are straightforward:

  • Enrolled students who attend at least one course in MSDN AA participating departments.

The conditions for professors, research assistants, and administrators are more extensive:

  • Professors and lecturers within the scope of their teaching activities and all domains linked with it.
  • Research assistants within the scope of teaching activities and for their academic and continuing education for example within the scope of a doctoral or postdoctoral thesis.
  • Administrators provided that they conduct laboratories for academic education with it.
  • The MSDN Academic Alliance can be used for research purposes solely at universities, as long as they are directly linked with academic teaching activities. By that Microsoft understands student research and degree or research projects within the scope of the academic and continuing education, such as doctoral or postdoctoral thesis. Others research projects cannot be supported by the MSDN Academic Alliance.
For all apply the usage guidelines under http://www.microsoft.com/germany/bildung/hochschule/produkte/msdnaa/default.mspx, which have to be reaccepted at every download!

The Electronic Licence Management System of the company e-academy is used for the distribution of the software.

ELMS (Electronic Licence Management System)

The ELMS is an online-based product management system for management and distribution of software licensed under the MSDN AA program.
  • The authentication in the ELMS is carried out through the TUHH E-Mail-Address and a password, which is disclosed per E-Mail to registered TUHH users by the ELMS.
  • There exists a local download server at the TUHH's computer centre, which can only be accessed over the campus network. There are selected software in form of ISO-images available. This server may only be accessed within the TUHH network!
  • Serial numbers and installation keys are assigned automatically to students/staff by the ELMS.
  • Logging the license agreement is not necessary anymore, since users approve the license agreement at the acquisition of the software over the ELMS.
  • Reports about license allocations and all transactions will be generated automatically. The request to transmit data to Microsoft is not necessary anymore with the use of the ELMS.

The tools and technologies provided through the MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) program may be used exclusively for academic instruction, academic projects, and non-commercial research only.

The software that is part of the program may not be used for any IT infrastructure or administration purposes at the MSDN AA member's school, university, foundation, or organization.

Students who are currently enrolled in at least one course in the member department may install the software on their personal computers.

Students who are in a member department but are not currently enrolled in courses that lead to credit or a certificate are not eligible to obtain MSDNAA software for their personal computers.

Departmental faculty members as well as staff directly involved in administering dedicated MSDN AA systems and providing support for MSDNAA software may install the software on their personal computers

Department, Faculty, or Staff members who are not directly involved with teaching or system administration related to MSDNAA may not install the software on their personal computers.

Microsoft Windows may only be installed to facilitate the use of other MSDNAA software and technologies such as Microsoft Visual Studio .NET for instruction or research.

Under MSDN AA: Windows XP may not be used only as a terminal for accessing a UNIX telnet server. Windows Server 2003 may not be used to host an e-mail server even if the e-mail software was purchased separately.

Multiple departments in an institution may purchase MSDNAA if each department meets the qualifying requirements.

The designated program administrator must be an employee of the member department or organization and is responsible for administering, managing, and enforcing the guidelines set by the MSDN End-User License Agreement (EULA) and the MSDNAA License Amendment.
