Mechatronics, Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Mechatronics program includes content from all engineering disciplines with a special focus on all topics of networking and working in a team, since it is precisely in this interface that the actual competence of the mechatronics engineer lies. Thus, in addition to the fundamentals of mathematics, the content on programming, design, electrical engineering and control and measurement technology form an equal part of the compulsory part of the course. Teamwork is reflected in the construction project and the module on the design of mechatronic systems. A compulsory elective component and the possibility to choose between one of five specializations allow for flexible specialization already in the bachelor's degree.

What characterizes this study program?

The program is naturally characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity and active communication with fellow students and across the boundaries of individual departments. This is especially facilitated by the fact that TUHH, despite its intensive growth, is still a relatively small university where the professors and lecturers are approachable and accessible - even in the Bachelor's program.

At the same time, the specializations also provide the opportunity to qualify for the typical fields of work and research in the city of Hamburg and northern Germany. Be it topics such as control engineering and AI (dynamic systems and AI), which are firmly anchored in the research structure of TUHH, be it the ubiquitous shipbuilding (ship systems engineering) or be it medical engineering. This is flanked by the more general majors in robotic systems or electrical systems.

In the winter semester 2023/24, the Bachelor Mechatronics at Hamburg University of Technology was fundamentally reformed. In addition to an update of the study content towards more information technology and a reduction of certain parts in the field of mechanics, above all a possibility for five specializations in the Bachelor for a real orientation according to one's own interests was created. The specializations are

  • Robots and machine systems
  • Medical Technology
  • Dynamic Systems and AI
  • Marine Engineering
  • Electrical Systems

Why mechatronics?

Stephan tells us why mechatronics is everywhere in everyday life and how he himself came to study exactly that.

How is the program structured?

The Mechatronics program at TUHH includes a core area (126 credit points) with a compulsory elective module (i.e. the possibility to choose between one of three modules), as well as a specialization (42 credit points) with own compulsory elective modules, as well as the bachelor thesis in the 6th semester.

The core area is fundamentally oriented, both in terms of the tools every engineer needs (mathematics, computer science, materials, measurement and control technology) and specifically in terms of the first team projects (design project). In mechatronics, it also includes fundamentals of mechanics and electrical engineering and electronics on an equal footing.

The specializations combine specific courses of the respective area, depending on the selection. This always includes a further specialization either in the context of electrical engineering, information or mechanics, as well as a series of special lectures around the typical products and product components of the specialization.

Regardless of the choice of specialization in combination with the core area, the mechatronics engineer will always be equally trained in all typical engineering disciplines, and will have gained an extended insight in one direction according to their specialization in the area of "dynamics", i.e. the description of systems that change rapidly and move, oscillate, exchange energies.

In addition to these technical competencies, competencies in the area of teamwork and product development are taught in particular, in order to recognize and consider the importance and significance of interface definitions at an early stage.

What job can I take?

After studying mechatronics at Hamburg University of Technology, you will be able to design intelligent systems and products and understand their complex technical interrelationships. Typical mechatronic products are electric drives, sensors for sensing the environment and their corresponding data processing. They are used, for example, in classic industrial robots or small humanoid robots that will serve as home robots in the future. However, everyday things such as an electric window regulator or a fully automatic coffee machine are also created.

Due to the interdisciplinary education, graduates of mechatronics at TUHH find excellent employment opportunities in companies in the automotive and aviation industry, automotive engineering, automation technology, robotics, in microsystems and precision engineering and in medical technology.

What are the requirements?

Mechatronics is the right field of study for you if ...

► your enthusiasm for research extends to different areas.

► you want to understand how systems function as a whole.

► you are interested in mechanics, electrical engineering and programming.

When studying mechatronics at Hamburg University of Technology, you can expect a lot of practical work, trying things out and building things. You also have to do a lot of calculations, so mathematics is always part of your studies.

Basic internship

A 10-week work-related internship is required for the degree program. The best time for the basic internship is before the beginning of the study, even if a proof must follow only in the fourth semester. It is possible to divide the practical activity into several sections or different companies. The internship is considered tertiary education and is therefore eligible for BAföG funding. Please inform yourself about the basic internship regulations before starting the internship!

How do I apply?

You can apply annually for the winter semester in the period from June 1 to July 15. For this you need a university entrance qualification (usually Abitur). If this has been acquired abroad, you will need proof of sufficient German language skills.

Get fit for your studies with MINTFIT! With this free online test you can check your knowledge in the MINT subjects mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science. On the basis of completed test items, you will quickly receive individual feedback on your level of knowledge. You can easily catch up on missing knowledge on your own with the connected e-learning courses.

Can I include a semester abroad?

Yes, you can. It is not a fixed part of the program, but with a little organizational talent in the selection of modules, you can study abroad for the fifth or sixth semester, for example. The International Office advises and supports international students. On the website of the International Office you will also find information about studying abroad for students of the TUHH. TUHH welcomes and encourages student exchange.

Can I study in the dual program?

Yes, you can! All Bachelor of Science degree programs at the TU Hamburg can be studied dual. Since 2003, the Technical University of Hamburg has also offered its Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in a dual study variant in cooperation with more than 50 cooperating companies.

The study concept combines complete university studies with professional practice in the engineering field. The students are employed by one of our cooperating companies and, as cohorts across study programs, represent the entire spectrum of engineering sciences.

The program is rounded off by seminars on the development of social skills, so that graduates can face the challenges of the working world in a responsible manner.

You can find more information about the dual study program at the TU Hamburg here: https://dual.tuhh.de/

What master's degree programs are available?

After completion of the bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, continuation in one of the following master's degree programs is an option:

How is campus life?

Hamburg University of Technology is one of the youngest universities in Germany. On the clearly arranged and cozy campus you will quickly get to know your new fellow students and in spring and summer numerous seating areas and green spaces invite you to linger together in the fresh air. In an almost familiar atmosphere, we celebrate our summer festival every year in June, where our TU's own beer brewing group "Campusperle" also offers its creations. Of course, you can also get involved in our numerous AGs, which also organize regular events, e.g. screenings by the cinema AG, concerts by SingING or SymphonING, or the participation of the HULKs in international robot soccer championships.

If you decide to study at the TUHH, you also decide for Hamburg, the metropolis on the Elbe, Germany's second largest city and certainly its most beautiful. Hamburg combines urbanity and maritime life and is also Germany's greenest city with over a million inhabitants. You will never get bored here: rowing on the canals during the day or jogging in the city park, sunset on the Elbe, a concert in the Elbphilharmonie or a pub night on the Schanze and the fish market at dawn. Here you will find everything for the adventurous, but also numerous quiet places to pause. Together with your fellow students, you will certainly explore Hamburg and its treasures quickly and get to know your new favorite place.
